The VAFA congratulates Old Scotch’s Matt Bennett who has been named the Round 8 Grill’d Rising Star after his outstanding performance in the Cardinals’ first win of the season, defeating Old Xaverians by six points at Camberwell Sports Ground.
“This is Matt’s first year being registered at Old Scotch Football Club, after playing with the Oakleigh Chargers last year in the TAC Cup. Matt tore his hamstring in Round 1 this season and these are his first couple of games back playing consecutively, which is nice to start getting some consistent matches under his belt.
Matt is a cross between Jake Lever and James Sicily with an ability to play tall or small when needed. Matt’s strengths are his athleticism and speed, which combined with his height allow him to be quite dynamic and play in multiple positions. Matt utilizes his athleticism to become a strong 1 on 1 defender, but to also then take and intercept marks and break a line out of the back half with run and carry.
Matt is reasonably quiet at the club, being only his first year here. But enjoys just going about his work and taking every game like a business trip, with a no-nonsense attitude to support the team and play at his best week in, week out.”
