PEGS drop Bomb on Roys, CYs take back top spot

PEGS bounced back from last week’s loss to Old Geelong in the most emphatic way possible, knocking off the previously undefeated Fitzroy by 16 points at PEGS Sporting Fields. Trailing by 13 points at the first break, the Bombers kicked three unanswered goals in the second and took a 10-point lead into the main break. From there it was tit for tat as both sides hit the scoreboard; however, the Bombers made the most of their chances with final scores of 10.12 to 7.14. Max Philpot kicked two goals in a BOG performance for the Bombers and Robert Baddeley was outstanding in the ruck. Max Davie continued his strong form for the Roys as they fall back into second spot on the ladder one week after claiming the throne. PEGS remain in fourth and one game above Old Camberwell in fifth.

With both sides sitting 3-4 coming into Round 8, Marcellin secured a much-needed seven-point victory over Old Ivanhoe at Chelsworth Park. Trailing by 30 points at half time, the Eagles were relentless as they piled on nine goals to four in the second half; including, six to three in the third. Daniel McMahon booted two fourth-quarter goals for the Eagles and four majors for the match, while Shaun Tyquin was named best afield. Mal Mitris led from the front during the Hoers’ first half dominance with four goals alongside a standout performance from Justin Powick. Marcellin now have a one-game buffer over the Hoers in sixth spot on the Premier C ladder.

One week after losing their first game for the season, Williamstown CYMS cruised back into top spot on the ladder with a 134-point victory over Peninsula at Fearon Reserve. Leading by 17 points at the first break, the CYs exploded with nine goals in the second term and a total of 24 to five in the final three quarters. Nick Ebinger was unstoppable up forward and finished the match with seven goals, while Ben Gray (5), Jack Gray (4) and Jack Noonan (4) each had few issues in front of goal. Blake Hillman stood tall for the Pirates as their only multiple goal kicker and best player. While the CYs fly back into the number one spot following the Roys’ loss to PEGS, the Pirates are in trouble in ninth with a record of 1-7 and percentage of 58.57%.

Old Camberwell made it three wins from their past four matches as they defeated St Mary’s Salesian by 50 points at Gordon Barnard Reserve. The first half proved a hard-fought contest with the Welelrs leading by just 17 points at the main break. However, 11 goals to six in the second half sealed the match for the Wellers as they had seven multiple goal kickers. Robert Campbell, Nick Latsas and Alex Taverner each recorded three goals, while Chris Hensby continued his outstanding form for the victors. Louis Holmes (4) and Manny Dolan (3) did their customary work forward of centre with seven goals between them for the Saints and James Curwood led from the front all day. After starting the season 1-3 from their first four, the Wellers are now 4-4 and in fifth spot on the ladder. The Saints are finding it tough and remain in 10th spot on the ladder with just the one win.

Old Geelong maintained touch with the top two after they ran out 37-point winners over Old Mentonians at Keysborough Sporting Fields. The third-placed OGs lead by five points at the first break but kicked away with 14 of the last 22 goals. Jock Grimshaw delivered a standout performance for the OGs up forward as the big man booted five goals for the second time this season. Jeremy Nettlefold was named best afield, while Darcy Brown toiled valiantly for the Panthers. OGs now sit just one win behind both the CYs and Roys while maintaining a one-game buffer and almost 15% over PEGS in fourth.
