Razorbacks edge closer to finals berth, Trobers down Falcons

UHS-VU flexed serious muscle when it dispatched South Melbourne Districts by 173 points at Brens Oval. The ladder leaders were unrelenting whether kicking with or against the Melbourne breeze, registering 44 scoring shots to one. Mitch Sweeney top-scored with seven goals and another six teammates kicked multiples. Ethan Clarke was best afield for the Vultures, while Adam Bermingham and Jamie Brooker fought hard for the Swans. Both sides sit at opposite ends of the ladder as the Swans search for their first win of the year.

Swinburne University put a two-game gap between themselves in fourth and Canterbury in fifth as they defeated the Cobras by 58 points at Canterbury Sports Ground. Leading by 17 at three quarter time, the Razorbacks nailed nine goals to two in a dominant final term. Ben Higgins (6) and Richard Lugg (4) kicked 10 of Swinburne’s 17 goals while Zac Scrase was best afield. Andrew Hummerston played a lone hand for the Cobras with four goals and as their best player.

La Trobe University kept their slender finals hopes alive with a 46-point victory over Albert Park at La Trobe Sporting Fields. After a slow start, whereby they trailed 6-12 at the first break, the Trobers nailed seven unanswered in the second quarter and maintained their lead for the remainder of the match. Matthew Ogle continued his red-hot form and was best afield for the Trobers, while James Brick led the Falcons with three majors. The Trobers are sixth and two games outside the four, while the Falcons remain ninth and a game behind the eighth-placed Point Cook.

Power House registered their 13th win for the year as they held on to defeat Point Cook by nine points at Saltwater Reserve. Leading by 35 points at the last break, the House were made to work for it as the Bulldogs kicked four goals to one in the fourth. Declan Nannery kicked four goals for the second week in a row for the House and Adam Collett kicked two as his strong form continued. The Dogs remain eighth and a game ahead of the Falcons.

Westbourne Grammarians went one step closer to solidifying a finals berth after they defeated Richmond Central by 44 points at Westbourne Grammar. Leading by eight points heading into the fourth term, the Warriors piled on six straight goals in what was a dominant finish. Agon Bahtiri top-scored with three goals for the Warriors and Chris Hudson was best afield for the second time in as many weeks. Harry Crowe stood out for the Snakes as they sit seventh and one game above the Falcons in ninth, while the Warriors are third and three games ahead of those vying for finals outside the four.
