Stealing Hearts; Haileybury claim first women’s flag

Old Haileybury claimed their first VAFA Wilson Women’s flag when they overcame Old Scotch at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday afternoon. After finishing fourth at the end of the home & away season, compared to Old Scotch in second, the Hearts showed utter determination en route to the grand final after inspiring wins over Old Brighton and Beaumaris. Undaunted by their previous two encounters with the Scotch Stars, both of which were three-goal plus losses, the Hearts put the foot down from the opening bounce in this ultimate decider, racing to a four goal first term thanks to the handywork of Romy Teubler (1), Sarah Casey (1), Jordan Shanks (1) and Danielle Frawley (1). Though the Scotch Stars did manage to stunt the Hearts score-power from there onwards, restricting them to just four points for the remaining three quarters, the standout work-rate from Charlotte Serafini, Greta Larkey (1) and Emily Jarman just wasn’t enough to impact the scoreboard beyond their final 2.7 score. For the victorious Haileybury, who emerged as eventual 13-point premiers, Casey (1) was absolutely marvellous with her solitary goal and around the ground efforts, and rightfully earned the BOG honours accordingly.
