Old Melburnians kick-started their 2019 campaign in style, claiming the women’s Lightning Premiership following a thrilling one-point victory over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in today’s final at Keysborough Playing Fields.

OM’s, who were the only team to win all three of their round robin matches earlier in the day, kicked the first goal of the final before the Tigers hit back at the start of the second half. An incredible defensive display from the OM’s backline helped them stave off a number of Tiger attacks late in the game before a rushed behind in the final 30 seconds of the match handed them victory.

The Tigers were outstanding across the day and won two of their three games en route to the final, while the newly-formed Parkdale Vultures also claimed two wins and finished in third spot on the ladder.

Albert Park, St Mary’s Salesian and St Bernard’s rounded out the six, showcasing fantastic skill and attack on the ball.

The VAFA thanks all players, officials and support staff who took part in today’s Lightning Premiership, and gives special thanks to Old Mentonians Football Club for the use of their outstanding facilities and assistance across the day.
