WHEN Old Mentonians Amateur Football Club put a call out to women to start up a new football team, the strong response surprised even them.

Club president Tim Appel thought there’d be about 10 girls at best who’d be willing to play, but 30 turned up to the information session.

And now that training gets underway for the 2017 season, the Panthers are confident they’ll be able to field a side in the newly-created Victorian Amateur Football Association’s women’s league.

“The amount of publicity that (the AFL women’s league) has received has certainly lifted the enthusiasm levels for local women’s footy,” Mr Appel said.

“But perhaps there was also already a quiet, background market sitting there, waiting to be approached, because there are a lot of women who’ve shown a lot of interest immediately.”
