Sam Birtles – Big V ChampionSam Birtles Big V Champion

Sam Birtles was with Doug Arnold part of the same Hampton Rovers team that dominated the VAFA for a number of season. It is no coincidence that Birtles was also a regular part of the Big V during this time, mostly playing at centre half forward. Birtles represented the Big from 1947-52 (although he missed 1948 carnival) and represented the All-Australian Amateurs in the National Championships in 1950 and 51. Birtles was captain of the Big V in 1952 against South Australia. In his club career he won three premierships with Rovers, but 1949 was his stand out year. Birtles won the A Section goal kicking with 64 goals and also won the Woodrow Medal.
