Grill’d Rising Star Nominee: Mitch Hughes

Congratulations to St Bernard’s young gun, Mitch Hughes, who has received the Round 7 Grill’d Rising Star nomination for his standout performance against University Blacks.

“Mitch first started playing at St Bernard’s in Under 14’s with Tony Caven as coach. This year he began his first season of senior football and has continually performed at a high level alongside his twin brother, Chris.

Mitch has been runner up B&F three times, made the rep team for Western Region in under 15’s and received BOG in his first game playing where he does now on half back flank.

Some of Mitch’s strengths include being a strong one-on-one player, displaying great pressure and defence, can kick on both sides of his body with accuracy and he is known for laying strong tackles and feeding the hand ball out.

Mitch plays a bit like Brendon Goddard with how he uses the ball really well, has strong hands and can take a grab when needed. He often feeds out the handball to get the ball moving and has a really good footy brain.

Mitch is best known at St Bernard’s for being a great team player, showing encouragement to other team mates and often during the game has an uncanny instinct to find his twin brother out on a wing. Mitch really grew as a person when he was named captain of the 19’s last year with top junior coach Rocky Ianello. He enjoys being part of the senior group and will work into the midfield in years to come.”
