The VAFA extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Michael Sigalas after he sadly passed away following a courageous battle with cancer.

For the past five years, Michael has been a popular assistant coach at the Eley Park Sharks after leading Old Camberwell to four successive U19 premierships as coach from 1999-2002.

Such was Michael’s talent in the coaching arena, he won the VAFA Junior Coach of the Year in 2002 and the AFCA Victoria Youth Coach of the Year in the same season.

May Michael rest in peace.

Eley Park Sharks

“Eley Park Sharks FC wishes to offer our deepest sympathies to Lily, Todd, Troy, Trent and Mitch as they deal with the loss of the great man.

Michael had battled cancer bravely for over three years but the bravest fight we have ever witnessed has sadly come to an end.

We were fortunate enough to have had Ziggy grace our rooms over the past five years as an assistant coach, sponsor, recruiter, mentor and most importantly, a friend. Like his family, we are left shattered with this loss. His input to our young club was and will remain enormous and we thank him and Lily for their generous contributions over the years. It is because of their generosity that our club’s future is stable and it is something we will never forget.

His inspirational team addresses and his booming voice from the coach’s bench will be sorely missed and our only regret is that he didn’t come to us sooner.

RIP Zig”

Old Camberwell Grammarians

“To Lil, Troy, Todd, Trent & Mitchell our support and thoughts are with you all.

Michael’s passing will leave a void on our community and many other sporting groups he was involved with. From his years of coaching prowess at OCGFC with the Under 19’s and Seniors, it was his relationship with the under 19 players, the influence and presence he provided to these boys that will always be remembered, with a smile, fondness and pride.

He enjoyed his moments coaching and mentoring young men with their football and life. If it was on the football field or his office in Canterbury, it was always entertaining and successful.

An old boy of Camberwell Grammar his love of his old school saw him sending his four boys there, Troy, Todd, Trent & Mitchell.  He coached junior football, then lead the Wellers’ Under 19’s to four consecutive premierships (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002) and the memories those teams have is endless. Ziggy then went on to coach the Seniors (2003, 2004) and was an assistant in the 2007 premiership year. Throughout these years Michael’s influence to the boys was marvellous.

Recently the club recognised and honoured Michael (2015) in naming the Best & Fairest Under 19 award as the “Michael Sigalis Medal”. I know this was a very proud moment for him and his family.

Always to be remembered in our community and hearts.

Vale Ziggy”
