2015 VAFA Ireland/England Tour: A Wrap

2015 VAFA Ireland/England Tour: A Wrap

The VAFA biannual tour of Ireland is officially over for 2015 as the majority of the playing group, parents and staff arrive back in Melbourne with a 3-2 win/loss record from their five-match series.

Despite being dubbed the Ireland tour, the VAFA had the opportunity to play a London All Stars side in England to conclude their trip, overpowering their opponents by 74 points and tipping the ledger in the Big V’s favour with their third win.

Prior to their final match, the Big V travelled around the Emerald Isle and played four International Rules matches against Irish opponents Cork U21s, Tuam Stars, Combined Universities and Donaghmore/Ashbourne.

Led by coach Cam Roberts and assistant John Kanis, the Big V took little time to adapt to the round ball and found themselves within striking distance of their opponents in each match.

Game # Opponent W/L Margin Spirit of the Big V Recipient
1 Cork U21s W 4 Sam Barnett (Old Scotch)
2 Tuam Stars L 6 Marshall Rippon (Uni Blues)
3 Combined Universities W 78 Michael Barnes (SBMT)
4 Donaghmore/Ashbourne  L 23 Tom Sullivan (St Bernard’s)
5 London All Stars W 74 Jeremy Mugavin (Uni Blues)

Away from the football field, the touring party indulged in some of the world’s most eye-catching scenery including the Cliffs of Moher, Croke Park, Kilmannan Jail and Trinity College, amongst many more.

To see what the playing group and staff got up to on tour, look through Keeping up with the Big V boys as they Instagram’d their travels.

The VAFA is proud to offer these opportunities to its members and congratulates the Big V side on their successful tour.

Furthermore, the VAFA would like to thank each of the Big V’s opponents for their hospitality and making the trip as fantastic and as memorable as it was.
