BIG V CLUB INDUCTEES 2014

By VAFA · August 1, 2014
BIG V CLUB INDUCTEES 2014

This year sees two modern greats and a great from the 1950’s that was often referred to in the same breath as John Coleman. The 8th Annual Big V Club Lunch this year inducts Duncan Anderson, Michael Blood and Andrew Ramsden as Champions of the Big V.
All have had sensational amateur careers but it is perhaps Anderson who is the most fascinating. Anderson was a school boy superstar at Melbourne Grammar and he smashed the APS goal kicking record of the day. He continued this form at University Blues and one only need look back at the sports pages of the 1950s where you will see reports on Amateur Football sitting side by side with reports from the VFL. There is an article comparing the respective starts to the season of Anderson and John Coleman – Anderson had kicked more goals than Coleman after four rounds.
Anderson was courted to play in the VFL but chose to remain an Amateur with a view to obtaining a Rhodes Scholarship, which he took up in 1955. Anderson is the only player to win five consecutive A Section goal kicking awards, winning the award in each year he played in the VAFA. Anderson’s best haul in a Big V jumper was eight goals he kicked against Western Australia in 1953.
We obviously know a lot more about Michael Blood and Andrew Ramsden. Both were rivals for their clubs and teammates for the Big on the field. Both were the dominant ruckmen of their time, Both players served as Big V captain for a number of years.
Blood continued to serve the Big V as a Chairman of Selectors for three years whilst Ramsden only became eligible to be inducted this year after he had retired from his memorable career.
We congratulate all three on their formal induction to the Big V Club.
See the tribute videos to all three below.
