Blues break duck, Wellers halt Roys in Prem B Women’s

Blues break duck, Wellers halt Roys in Prem B Women’s

Round 3 threw up some surprising results as ANZAC round was punctuated by upsets, tight finishes, and wet weather.

Kicking off the round in Clayton, Monash broke their duck with a hard fought three-point win over the Bushrangers. All the goals in this clash were scored in the first half, as both teams scrapped for the result in a second half which mustered only two behinds to Monash. Ainslee Elliott continued her impressive start to the season as the best performer for Monash, whilst Carly Jevric was outstanding in her first outing for Yarra Old Grammarian’s this season.

Fitzroy-ACU’s undefeated start to the season was halted at Gordon Barnard Reserve by Old Camberwell, who were highly impressive in their 16-point victory. From quarter-time onwards the game was the Wellers’ to lose, steadily building the margin until the final siren. Eloise Defina kicked two of Camberwell’s four goals, earning her place amongst the best players. For Fitzroy, Alexa Madden picked up more votes as she fought gallantly for the away side.

Collegians fell agonisingly short of their first win in the third game of the round, eventually succumbing to an inaccurate Old Geelong by 3 points at home. Leading by 8 points at half-time, Collegians sensed an opportunity to launch their season in tough conditions. However, the weight of OG’s scoring shots proved too much in the end, the 3.10 to 4.1 score line proving such. Hannah Singleton was huge again for Collegians, but the dominance of Vicky Tan (who’s polled votes in every game) and Stephanie Topp was ultimately too much for the hosts.

ANZAC Day Sunday served up the shock result of the round, as Melbourne University easily disposed of unbeaten Beaumaris by 21 points. Uni raced to a five-goal lead at the major break, and it was only after this that Beaumaris managed to influence the game, but to no avail. Jade Tancred kicked 3 goals for the victors and Hannah Smith starred. Sienna Tedde was best for Beaumaris.

This set of results leaves Old Geelong clear at the top, with Fitzroy, Beaumaris and Old Camberwell rounding out the top four on two wins apiece. Winless Collegians still sit winless at the foot of the table and will be determined to change the narrative this coming week.
