The VAFA first fielded an Under 18 representative team in 1981for a match against South Australia. The concept of Under 18s was then on hold until 1993 when the AFL introduced the elite Under 18 competition the TAC Cup, then the VAFA played a representative team against the various sides in that competition for a couple of seasons without much success. Since 2009 a VAFA invitational Under 18 team has travelled to New Zealand at the end of each season to play a couple of matches against the best under age New Zealand footballers.
