Melbourne University WFC became the second William Buck Premier champions after they defeated Marcellin by 18 points in today’s decider at Elsternwick Park. Conditions ranged from sunshine to severe hail at times, but it did little to stop the Mugars who were four points down at the main break as they kicked three unanswered goals in the second half. Leah Caluzzi put on a defensive masterclass for the Mugars and was awarded the BOG medal for her efforts as she intercepted several Sheagles forward thrusts. Skipper, Ruby Grounds, starred in the second half comeback for the Mugars while Ash Bye impressed throughout the full four quarters. Ellie Gavalas was a standout for the Sheagles with a match-high 20 disposals and a goal for the Sheagles alongside 17 touches and 10 tackles from Brianne Keogh. The win breaks a 13-year drought for the Mugars, while the Sheagles were outstanding as they made their second consecutive grand final after last year’s premiership.

Earlier in the day, the Sheagles were victorious against Fitzroy-ACU in the Premier Reserve Grand Final, running out 23-point winners. 14 scoring shots to six paved the path for the Sheagles’ win as both sides kicked a goal each in the final term. Cara Jeffers kicked a goal and was named best afield for the Sheagles while teammate Jennae Wakefield top-scored with three goals. Emily Fitt shone for the Roy Girls with two goals.
