Prahran Assumption’s Club XVIII (1) side will be sporting white arm bands in support of the White Ribbon Foundation when they clash with St Francis Xavier at Como Park this weekend.
White Ribbon and its aim to abolish domestic violence against women is a movement close to all in the side following the tragic passing of Karen Belej in Mildura less than three weeks ago.
Two of Karen’s brothers, Chris and Tim, collectively played over 200 games for Prahran and the team want to support the initiative as a means of honouring the Belej family and ending domestic violence.
“As a Club we just want to show support for a couple of our well-liked past players and their family,” Prahran Assumption Club XVIII coach Michael Slaven said.
“We can’t begin to understand what the family is going through but hope that dedicating this match helps them to appreciate that they are in our thoughts.
“Karen was instrumental in the White Ribbon movement so we thought it fitting that we support the cause as well”.
As well as wearing white arm bands, Prahran Assumption will be taking donations for the White Ribbon Foundation and commemorate the day with a post-match gathering at the ground.
The game will commence at 11:40am on Saturday 21 May at Como Park, South Yarra.
Anyone interested in supporting the Belej family or White Ribbon is encouraged to contact Michael Slaven at [email protected].
