In a low-scoring, scappy encounter, Xavs led all day to record a solid 19 point win. Their forwards Damian Lynch and Tim Clarke were in everything while Andrew Bowen did a number on competition’s leading goalkicker Fergus Watts. For the Lions, who had a stack of key players out, former Hawthorn small man Nick Ries was a standout. Collegians’ loss has opened the door for Old Scotch, who are now outright top after they hung on to defeat St Bede’s/Mentone by three points. The visitors kicked themselves out of the contest with poor set shot kicking and had a tricky shot to win the game with a minute to go but it went astray, In an extraordinary game at Sportscover Arena, De La jumped Uni Blues and raced to a seven goal lead at half time. It didn’t seem to worry the students however, who banged on 15 goals to two in the second half to run out comfortable 29 point winners. In the relegation battle at Old Trinity, Uni Blacks hung on to record their first victory of the year while in Ivanhoe, the home side downed Old Brighton by two goals. In the B Section match of the day, Old Essendon did it on their ear, belting Marcellin by ten goals. Other winners were Old Camberwell, Old Haileybury and Old Carey, who upset the highly fancied St Bernards at the snakepit. In a dramatic game at the Junction Oval, Old Melburnians got the chocolates with the last kick of the day over St Kevins.
