The Ireland tour was cancelled last year when negotiations between the AFL and Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) broke down. Now the AFL International Rules Series against Ireland is back on, the GAA have opened their doors to the AAFC team playing games across the country.
The team will play 4 games in Cork, Galway and Dublin. The tour commences with a match in Cork against prominent club team Bishopstown. This will be followed by a game against the National University of Ireland in Galway. Two games will be played in Dublin, one against a representative club team and the feature match against the GAA Academy consisting of the best youth in Ireland.
The team will play International Rules.
There are 20 players touring from the 4 traditional football states: SA, Victoria, WA and Tasmania.
Tasmania re-entered the AAFC in 2008 after being out in the wilderness since 1994.
The VAFA players selected are Ben Dowd (St Kevin’s Old Boys), Brendan Iezzi (Old Trinity), Peter McGettigan (St Bede’s Mentone Tigers), Andrew McGuinness (Old Brighton) and Jack Watts (University Blues).
