Round 6 revealed again the truth behind the old adage that a week is a long time in football. In Premier, top-ranked, smooth-moving Collegians was no match for a desperate De La Salle, led by the audacious Aaron Shields. St Bede’s/Mentone Tigers travelled to Marles and lowered their colours to Old Trinity, who were best served by Nick “Thurston” Howell and Andrew Ramsden, who slotted five. Old Melburnians controlled the first half against Uni Blues at the Junction and trailed by just a point at lemon-time, with last use of the wind. The Varsity stopped them cold, winning by 27 points after a six goal final term. Jack Watts was superb and Charles Shaw, jeered roundly (but politely) from the terraces by former classmates, extended his streak in the BP to six.   Old Xavs did not have it all its own way at McKinnon, where Old Haileybsury recruit Travis Ridgway booted nine. Not to be outdone, Dan Rush did the same for the Red and Blacks, as the reigning premier finally pushed away to a 54 point win. Old Scotch meets Old Carey tomorrow at sportscover, beginning 1:20pm.
In Premier B, the late mail on Old Brighton proved to be correct. with the Tonners disposing of Uni Blacks. Mick Dewar booted five for the Carmine Hose. St Bernard’s defeated Hampton Rovers at the Boss, Oakleigh’s brilliant start crushed Old Ivanhoe. Dion Lucas kicked five for the Krushers, while Owen Weatherley matched that for the Browns. Brett Sinclair kicked six as Caulfield Grammarians trounced Marcellin while St Kevin’s finished strongly in the second half to down Beaumaris.
Premier C leaders AJAX clubbed MHSOB, while Mazenod tipped out Fitzroy in a high scoring affair. Rich Keane’s five fired Ormond’s big win over the Ashes. Old Camberwell had a win at the runway over Old Essendon. Werribee Districts rolled again, crushing Rupertswood.
Division One trendsetters Banyule defeated NOBSPC narrowly, Old Geelong fell at home to Peninsula by a solitary behind, with the Pirates getting five from Stu Grigg. Adam woods slipped through seven to see the Friars comfortably home over Bulleen Temp. Parkdale trounced Old Mentonians and williamstown was strong over Paradians. James Wong got seven for the CYs, James Kandilakis kicking five for the Raiders.
In Division Two, La Trobe came home with a wet sail to defeat rival Therry Penola. Jake George got five for the Penolans, but Stuey Patten got seven for the Trobers. Aquinas got off its duck when it defeated Old Westbourne and Glen eira finally shook a persistent Emmaus St Leo’s, with Tom Patterson kicking five for the winners. Mr Reliable Sab Ciavola scored eight as the Turtles pumped SMS, while Aaron Abela’s five fired St John’s big shakedown of SMD, who got five from Adam Ray in an otherwise poor afternoon.
Division Three saw Elsternwick find more strife, lowering its colours to Ivanhoe. Prahran Assumption continued its streak with a big win over Kew. Yarra Valley beat UHS-VU in a top four tilt, Hawthorn survived Albert Park’s straighshooting from Jason Murchie, who kicked seven, and Mt Lilydale edged the slumping Power House. The Gryphs squeaked home against West Brunswick.
In Division Four, SFX got seven from Ben Spencer and five from Dwayne Scott as it dropped Richmond Central. Dan O’Regan’s six goals helped the Cobras over Box Hill North, the Razorbacks got five each from Damon Green and Chris Kilmartin, the EP Sharks tossed North Brunswick and Aaron Marsh slotted ten as Point Cook whipped Chaddy.
