SATURDAY SKINNY

By VAFA · July 2, 2011
SATURDAY SKINNY

Premier football had some near surprises as both Collegians and Xavs had to come from behind to win against lesser fancied opponents today. Uni Blues were too strong for Old Melburnians with Sam Chadwick booting six, Old Carey came home hard against Trinity and St Bede’s/Mentone Tigers held out De La Salle. Shura Taft got five for Collegians.

In Premier B, Andrew Merrington’s five saw Bernies home against Beauy. Old Brighton kicked away from Uni Blacks in the second half, while St Kevin’s gutted out a low scoring affair against Marcellin. Louis O’Keefe slotted eleven as Caulfield Grammarians smashed Oakleigh, while Owen Weatherley got six for the Hoes, who tossed Hampton Rovers.

Premier C saw Werribee Districts trounce Fitzroy, while AJAX stayed handy with a win over the Wellers. Mazenod pumped Ormond, and Old Essendon beat Monash Blues. The Unicorns couldn’t go the distance with Rupo.

Division One action saw Peninsula kick a double century, with Shaun Payze kicking eleven and Harry Whitty five. Willy beat Old Geelong, Banyule stayed unbeaten in defeating contender Whitefriars, Paradians sneaked home against Bulleen-Temp, while North OLd Boys carted Parkdale.

Aquinas had a much needed win in Div 2, narrowly edging SMD in a thriller. Therry overcame St Jon’s in a tight one, while Glen Eira marches on after beating the Animals. The Turtles beat SMS, while La Trobe didn’t entirely have it its own way against Old Westbourne, but Stuey Patten’s five sealed the deal.

Division 3 glamour team the Four Blues caned Albert Park, with Peter Cristoforo kicking five. Yarra Valley carved up Mt Lilydale, getting six from Cam Britt and five from Ben “Emerging” Trend. Tim Madden got five as the Gryphs bested UHSVU, West Brunswick beat Hawthorn and red hot Elsternwick tipped out Power House. Resurgent Kew beat Ivanhoe.

Division 4 leader SFX tore up Chadstone, the Stationmasters slashed Box Hill North, getting six from Sean O’Connor and five from Eamonn Keogh. Aaron Marsh and Mark Pozzutto landed twin Michelles as the Cookies tipped North Brunswick. Scott McPherson’s eight wasn’t enough to get the Cobras over the Sharks. South Mornington made a coaching change and stormed home to upset the Razorbacks.

Round 11 is in the books – seven left to play.
