The season has well and truly started and we are already at the Queen’s Birthday break.
The One in Five partnership with VAFA has had a great start to the season. We attended the VAFA Pre-season dinner and gratefully received a cheque of $10,000 from VAFA. This generous donation was raised at the EFL/VAFA match on 1 April. We thank everyone who donated and helped to raise such a generous sum.
Earlier this year at a St Kevin’s training night, Neil Cole spoke to players about depression and mental illness. Neil has just released his second book “Stability in Mind”, which was launched recently by Denis Pagan. Neil is a mad footy (Kangaroos) supporter, and this is a highly readable book which I would recommend. Neil talks about footy and life, and how he has created a successful career, despite the challenging diagnosis of mental illness.
We are very happy to visit your club to, perhaps on a Thursday after training, to speak with your players.
Looking forward, VAFA has just announced that Round 9 will be a One in Five Round. This is an opportunity for clubs to raise some money for One in Five, as well as use to improve awareness of mental illness for all players.
One in Five and VAFA have identified some great leaflets which are simple to read, and which will help everyone in the club to learn more about mental illness, how to recognise the symptoms, and what to do next. These will be sent to clubs shortly, and I hope they help your club deal with this issue.
Let me know if I can help out: [email protected]
One in Five is the official charity of the VAFA.
