The wind and rain came earlier in the match over the bridge as Williamstown CYMS rebounded to put an early nail in the MHSOBs relegation coffin. The Unicorns led for periods but just couldn’t quite bring it all together to defeat Willy, ultimately going down by 20 points.
The second nail was knocked in by Old Geelong who lifted at home to defeat ladder leaders Hampton Rovers. The win takes the OGs two games clear of MHSOBs and above Old Mentonians. Rovers dropped their second game of the year and second in the space of three weeks. It’s not disastrous but finals can’t come soon enough for them.
Old Mentonians are now MHSOBs closest rival in terms of relegation swaps. The Panthers fell six points short of Whitefriars to leave a dangling carrot for the Unicorns. Although the Panthers have a far superior percentage so it will most likely come down to wins and losses and not by how much.
You can throw Bulleen Templestowe into that mix as they fell five points short of Prahran Assumption. The Two Blues stay in touch with the four chasing the spot occupied by Whitefriars.
Ormond held on to second spot withe a comfortable 10 goal win over Glen Eira.
Two weeks ago Division 2 looked to have been cut in half but in an incredible round, three of the top four all lost to sides below them.
Old Paradians caused upset of the day defeating Therry Penola by 2 points. The home side flew home in the last to come from behind and pinch their second heart stopping win in as many weeks. Whyley kicked five goals in the win that saw Therry drop just their second game of the year.
The second biggest upset came at Ferndale Park as Emmaus St Leos won their first game of the year over St Mary’s Salesian. The 41 point win was celebrated long and loud by the Animals.
In another upset, South Melbourne Districts defeated Old Eltham Collegians by 31 points. The Districts kept the Turtles scoreless in the opening term, but more importantly, they are now two games clear of the relegation place occupied by Monash Gryphons.
The Gryphons lost at home to St John’s by six goals. Scott kicked six and with Old Eltham dropping points, St Johns will still believe they are a shot at finals, despite still being two games out.
Yarra Valley were the only top four side to win. They defeated Ivanhoe by 22 points, the win now has the Bushrangers in the box seat for a double chance.
In Division 3 Table toppers Kew were too good for Swinburne Uni. The Bears saluting by 37 points at home.
Albert Park won the Lakeside Battle, defeating Power House by 50 points. The win has the Falcons just a game outside the six, sitting in 7th spot.
Equal on points with the Falcons are La Trobe Uni, who had a great 33 point win at Richmond Central. Central need to rediscover their early season form as they cling on to fifth spot.
Aquinas continued their strong second half of the year with a thrilling 1 point win over Elsternwick. The win has the Bloods into sixth spot.
Old Westbourne narrowly missed out on their first win of the year, going down to South Mornington by 7 points. The Tigers are still a mathematical chance of escaping the drop.
UHS-VU were too good for St Francis Xavier. Too many scoring options saw UHS-VU claim a 44 point win.
In Division 4 there were only three games and the most signifcant results had a bearing on who will finish sixth. North Brunswick (Baring 5 goals) defeated Chadstone by 45 points. The win sees North Brunswick hold on to 6th spot.
The other competitor for 6th spot is Dragons and they surrendered meekly to West Brunswick by 92 points.
Eley Park Sharks won by 167 points over Manningham Cobras. Twelve Sharks got on the scoresheet in the win, Barry the best of them with five goals.
