Old Xaverians made it to another grand final as they withstood an early assault from St Bedes/Mentone Tigers before going on to record a 41 point win at Sportscover Arena in the Premier Section 2nd Semi Final.
Competition leading goalkicker Brendan Goss kicked four and Michael Darvell (Inner FM Best on the Ground) were just two of a number of key contributors in the win. St Bedes/Mentone kicked five goals to one in the opening quarter but only kicked one goal after quarter time as Xaverians continued to apply the pressure.
In the Premier C preliminary final at Casey Fields, Old Ivanhoe booked an immediate return to Premier B by knocking Marcellin out in straight sets. Adrian Del Monte kicked 8 goals as the ‘Hoes recorded a 48 point win to book a grand final against Mazenod.
In Division 1, Ormond ensured a bayside battle for the Grand Final after their 11 point win over Williamstown CYMS at Trevor Barker Oval see them book a spot against Hampton Rovers in the decider next week. Matt Robbins kicked five goals in the win for the Monders.
In Division 2 the Bannister brothers made up for last week by kicking 10 goals between them to help Therry Penola earn promotion and a grand final spot against Yarra Valley next week. Jarrod Bannister kicked 7 and Corey 3 as Therry defeated St Mary’s Salesian by 42 points at Bill Lawry Oval.
In Division 4 Hawthorn had a cruel end to their season as the minor premier exited the finals race in straight sets after going down to Eley Pary Sharks by nine points. The Sharks earn promotion to Division 3 at the expense of the Hawks who will be rueing their missed opportunity to return straight back to Division 3 a year after a forced relegation.
The Northern Blues are the fairytale story of the competition having beaten West Brunswick in the 2nd preliminary final. Coming from sixth place on the ladder Northern Blues have qualified for a Grand Final and been promoted in their first full season of senior football in the VAFA. Damon Marcon kicked five goals for the Blues as they beat the Magpies by 17 points.
Division 3 and Premier B preliminary finals will be played tomorrow.
