Big V Weekend is here!
Representative football weekend is upon us, starting with Thursday’s Big V Gala Dinner, then Saturday’s two massive matches against PFL at VAFA HQ and finishing with Sunday’s matches at Bendigo.
University Blacks and Old Scotch put on an absolute finals classic at Sportscover Arena as Uni Blacks booked themselves into a preliminary final against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers next week.
Blacks came from 14 points down at half time to take a 11 point lead into the final quarter. Scores were level multiple times in the last but two Peter O’Rourke goals and Broc McCauley’s third were gave Blacks a lead they would never relinquish.
Mark Passador kicked two last quarter goals to get the Cardinals back in front, but Adam Pattison kicked his fourth to level things up. A series of Pattison marks in defence thwarted any Old Scotch attacks and Bede Mahon, Huw Lacey and Scott Weekley ran all day through the midfield.
The final margin of 19 points was sealed with a Lacey goal and Old Scotch bowed out of the finals in the first week for the second straight year.
Old Trinity will return to Premier Section a year after being relegated after they held on to defeat Old Melburnians by a point at Coburg City Oval in the Premier B Preliminary Final.
Andrew Ramsden booted five goals and the one point margin was achieved as Melburnians kicked a goal on the final siren to bring the margin back from 7 points.
In Division 3 the two preliminary finals were won by Kew and Elsternwick with both sides to meet in next week’s decider.
Kew ran out 37 point winners over St Francis Xavier as Andrew Brazzale kicked four goals in the win.
Kirk kicked four goals for UHS-VU but it was the spread of goal kickers and all round team performance that saw Elsternwick run out 31 point winners. Thornton kicked three goals for the Wicks who will join Kew in Division 2 next season.
