HOES, ROVERS, LIONS AND BLUES

By VAFA · September 14, 2013
HOES, ROVERS, LIONS AND BLUES

Congratulations to all premiership winners today but we start the report from Casey Fields where Old Ivanhoe were able upstage Mazenod in an absolutely classic Premier C Grand Final by 8 points. Jessop kicked five goals and Del Monte four as Old Ivanhoe upset the favourites.
In the Division 1 Grand Final at Trevor Barker Oval more than 2500 packed in to watch Hampton Rovers defeat Ormond by 57 points. The contest was close for most of the day with the Rovers maintaining a slight advantage before they kicked away in the last quarter. Jay Ting was best on the ground in the win.
In the Division 2 Grand Final Therry Penola bounced back from a 2nd Semi Final loss to Yarra Valley to run out 38 points. Trailing by three goals at half time, the Bushrangers were only able to add four behinds in the third term whilst allowing the Lions to kick three more majors. That established lead proved to be insurmountable in the last and the Bushranger’s attempt at back to back flags was over.
In the fairytale result of the day, Division 4 saw Northern Blues defeat Eley Park Sharks to win a premiership in the club’s first senior year in the VAFA. Blues who commenced the finals campaign in 6th spot have beaten the top three sides on the way to winning the premiership.
In the Premier Preliminary Final, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers came out with sting in their tail and played an aggressive brand of football from the outset against Uni Blacks. Having said this were unable to reflect their domination on the scoreboard.
Blacks responded after quarter time but late goals to the Tigers kicked away. At one stage in the third term the Tigers had a lead of over 40 points before a final quarter challenge from the Blacks saw them reduces the gap to 20 points with 10 minutes to play. However St Bedes/Mentone steadied and were able to seal a Grand Final berth with a late goal to win by 27 points. Of concern for the Tigers is key forward Michael Curcio who did his hamstring is will be ruled out of next week.
Tomorrow the Premier B Grand Final is at Sportscover Arena and the Division 3 Grand Final is at Ted Ajani in Kew with the U19 Premier Grand Final at Trevor Barker Oval.
