The newly formed AFL Victoria Melbourne Metro Championship will be played as a triple-header on Saturday 29th March. The three championship matches have been scheduled back-to-back at Visy Park in Carlton with the VAFA’s match against the Eastern Football League (EFL) scheduled as the showpiece match of the day, commencing at 3.20pm.
As the number one ranked community football competition in Melbourne, the VAFA will be keen to retain that status when they meet the number two ranked EFL. Simon Lethlean will again coach the senior VAFA side as he looks to keep his unbeaten run in tact.
The day will commence at 11am with the Western Region Football League (ranked 5th) taking on the Southern Football League (6th). The second match will commence at 1.10pm and will feature the Essendon District Football League (3rd) and the Northern Football League (4th). Then at 3.20pm the VAFA (1st) will take on the EFL (2nd).
Each of the matches will be officiated by umpires from an independent competition with the VAFA to provide the umpires for the match between the Western Region Football League and the Southern Football League.
The best players from the Metro Championships will be selected to represent AFL Victoria Melbourne Metropolitan against AFL Victoria Country in July.
Each of the metro competitions will have the challenging task of assembling a squad prior to the start of their respective home and away seasons. The VAFA will select the best players from the competition, with the squad to be announced in the coming months. This match will be the only time the senior Big V team plays in 2014 as the proposed match against AFL Sydney has been postponed.
The VAFA is looking forward to the challenge of taking on the best players from the EFL and hope as many VAFA supporters as possible can attend the match to support the Big V.
Details on ticketing and media coverage will be released closer to the date with the VAFA squad to be announced at vafa.com.au.
