OPENING DAY FOR PREMIER AND ITS ROUND 2 IN B & C

By VAFA · April 9, 2014
OPENING DAY FOR PREMIER AND ITS ROUND 2 IN B & C

You couldn’t have asked for a better way and start to kick off the 2014 Premier section season. It not only produced a perfect autumn’s day but some quality football itself. After a long summer and seven month break, the time had finally come to bounce the first ball for round one in the premier section season.
Promoted Old Trinity has a successful welcoming into premier section with a four point win over St Bernards at home. The Snowdogs led all match as their gun recruit and former AFL player Chad Jones kicked five, whilst Jack Hunt kicked four for Old Trinity to seal the victory. De La Salle met Old Scotch down at a windy Dairy Bell which caused inconsistent goal kicking, as both sides kicked 11 behinds a piece.  The Cardinals took the chocolates by 36 points, with recruit Jack Bull impressive. Evgeni Routman and Sam Williams named best afield for both sides respectively.
2013 Premier B premiers Old Brighton didn’t have the perfect start to their debut in premier section season with a 39 point defeat in the hands of Collegians. Shura Taft was the star for the Lions up forward kicking 7.
Beaumaris were slick in their 45 point victory over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers at Brindisi Street, as another bag of 7 goals in the section was kicked by Shark Scott Gower. Tim Doherty was the standout for the Tigers in their defeat with three goals and best on ground honours.
As the Main Oval opened their new pavilion, it seemed that it brought the Uni Blacks some success with a 13 point win over the 2013 Premiers Old Xaverians, with Adam Pattison kicking two, as Huw Lacey put in another solid performance.
Round 2 for Premier B Section saw some exciting matches played. Down at Brunswick Oval Fitzroy and Old Haileybury did battle, as the Lions played their home ground advantage well leading at every change, until the Haileyburians fought back in the last term causing the end result being the first draw in 2014.
Relegated University Blues had a 66 point win against Old Carey away from home. The Blues had 13 goals by half time with Dom Nixon kicking 6. AJAX continued their winning streak in 2014 with a 55 point win against the promoted Mazenod. Power forwards David Fayman and Jake Lew kicking 5 and 3 goals respectively for the Jackas, as Jace Kelly the standout for the Nodders in the defeat.
Caulfield Grammarians enjoyed playing their first match at home with a 37 point win over Old Ivanhoe. Former AFL player Andrew McQualter and Joel MacDonald were significant contributers to their sides, as McQualter kicked four goals for the Grammarians as MacDonald was named best afield for Old Ivanhoe.
After the disappointment of last weeks result against Fitzroy, St Kevins impressed with a 51 point victory against Old Melburnians away from home. Panayioti Karageorgiou had a field day with six goals for the SKOBS.
In Premier C,  Old Camberwell and PEGS both displayed playing great football as the lead changed numerous times between both sides during the match. The boys from Essendon redeemed themselves in the last term to come away with the two point victory.
Hampton Rovers seem to be enjoying their promotion to the Premier C section as they notched up their second victory straight against Marcellin. The Rovers had a few young debutants in their senior side which was a success with their 52 point win away from home as player/coach Guy Martyn kicked two.
After a impressive performance last week from Banyule they could not back it up for round 2 as they witnessed a 67 point defeat to the hands of Ormond. Tom Buckley kicked the third round of 7 goals.Scammell Reserve caused quite significant inaccurate goal kicking woes for Oakleigh and Peninsula (12 and 19 respectively). Patrick Ioannidis and Rob Bambery named best afield for both sides.
It was a close encounter down at the Gerry  Green as Parkdale Vultures and Monash Blues were neck and neck for most of the match. The Uni boys came out in the last outscoring the home side, six goals to one causing an upset. Monash Blue Joe Cosgriff led the charge with four goals.
A week off to refresh and gear up for a big round two and three respectively in the Premier sections in two weeks time.
