Greasy conditions greeted most senior venues across Melbourne for a reminder to all that this game we love is a winter game. Whilst some score lines reflected the influence of the weather other sides played as if it were dry and indeed prospered beneath the grey skies.
Premier’s Round 3 action saw a couple of crunch games, none more so than at Brighton Beach Oval where a winless Old Brighton hosted a winless De La Salle. The La Sallians established breathing space early, but the despite a closing of the gap, the Tonners couldn’t get closer than 20 points at the final siren.
At Banksia St, Beaumaris came from behind to deny Old Xaverians in one of the games of the season. Xavs jumped out of the blocks early and with Matt Handley firing (5 goals) a couple of key ins, they looked set to record their first win of the year. But the Sharks responded to draw to within four points at the main break. Multiple lead changes and five goals from Scott Gower had the Sharks ahead by just three points when the final siren sounded. Beaumaris are undefeated and a very pretty 3-0 whilst Old Xaverians are in the unusual position of being without a win after three games in 2014.
Collegians and St Bernard’s had an arm wrestle all day at Harry Trott but despite controlling large swaths of the play, the Lions couldn’t convert. St Bernard’s ability to make good from their scoring opportunities was one of the key differences. In a low scoring affair the final 23 point margin in favour of the visitors was the biggest of the match.
Old Trinity led by close to six goals at half time away to St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, but the new comebacks specialists weren’t going to let the promoted OT’s ruin the party for Luke ‘Juice’ Wintle’s 300th game for the Tigers. Pegging the margin back in the third then storming home with five-goals-to-two in the last the Tigers levelled the scores, but as they did in Round 1, Old Trinity found something and managed to hold on to win by four points for the second time in 2014. Old Trinity are undefeated whilst St Bedes/Mentone Tigers drop to a record of 1-2.
Uni Blacks must have caught something last week as they followed their eight goal fourth quarter effort in round 2 with a six goal opening term in round 3 against the visiting Cardinals. Old Scotch fought back throughout the day but the Blacks always had the game in hand and ended the afternoon with a 16 point win. The Blacks join Beauy and Old Trinity as one of three undefeated sides in Premier
In Premier B, Round 4 was make or break time for Old Ivanhoe and they rose the challenge magnificently to defeat the previously undefeated University Blues by 8 points on a wet afternoon at Chelsworth Park. The Blues were wasteful in front of goal booting 6.20 for the afternoon, however Jeremy Mugavin still managed to kick four of his side’s six goals. Joel McDonald managed three for the Hoes as they got their season back on track.
The SKOB’s have found a new gear in recent weeks after suffering a surprise opening day loss. They accounted for Old Haileyburians by seven goals at TH King as ten St Kevin’s players kicked goals.
AJAX rediscovered their mojo with a big 58 point win over a visiting Caulfield Grammarians. The Jackers were well served by their two-pronged forward line as Jake Lew (5 goals) and David Fayman (4) were on the end of much of the good work in midfield. However, the Jacker’s defenders like Kalmus, and Steinberg were equally valuable, as they restricted the Fields to just five goals for the day.
Old Carey moved their season to 3-1 with a solid win at Fitzroy by 30 points. The Panthers join Uni Blues, St Kevin’s and AJAX all on 3-1 after four rounds.
Old Melburnians got their season started with a well deserved 32 point win out at Mazenod. The OM’s had found some form last week in their close loss to Old Carey and McLardy’s three goals and Al Armstrong’s two were just to of the contributions in a morale boosting win. The prognosis from Premier B is that all teams have at least broken their duck in both the wins and losses column, proving yet again that this section is one of the most competitive in the VAFA.
Premier C
Banyule’s start to the season continued on it’s ugly trajectory as Oakleigh kicked seven goals to none in the final quarter at the Bear Cave to run out 51 point winners. What makes the result more galling for the Bears was they only trailed by two points at three quarter time. However it could have been worse as the Krushers booted eight behinds with their seven goals in the final term. Tolongs and Paola both kicked four each in the win as Oakleigh levelled their season whilst Banyule remain without a win this year.
Marcellin withstood an Old Camberwell comeback to eventually responds and kick away to a 31 point win. Ten Eagles were hit the scoreboard with McPherson and Anypas both booting three in the win that sees Marcellin in 3rd spot.
Parkdale Vultures provided the first upset of the round as they swooped on a previously unbeaten Peninsula at Mt Eliza. Dillon’s five goals for the Vultures helped them secure their first win of the season. Gleeson kicked six for the Pirates but it wasn’t enough to stop his side from going down by 33 points.
In another major shock, PEGS proved much too strong for an off Hampton Rovers. David Forrest was a star for the Bombers as he booted 10 goals as his side almost doubled the score of Rovers. The 62 point margin in favour of PEGS leaves both teams wedged in the four with a record of 3-1.
Ormond and Monash Blues both now sit at 2-2 after the Blues gave themselves too much work to do in the second half before eventually falling 10 points short of the Monders.
