The Cards withstood an epic last quarter fight back from Old Brighton to hold on and win an epic encounter by nine points in blustery conditions at Beach Oval Brighton today. The game was somewhat marred by a crosswind that hampered skills and made the judgment of marks, passes over anything but the shortest distances and shooting for goal almost a lottery. Despite this being a day of celebration, the opposition, St. Bede’s/Mentone Tigers, have a history of crashing Blacks parties (ref: 2007 Grand Final & last year’s Preliminary Final.) It was therefore no surprise to see a close first quarter played at a very high intensity. After trailing at each change and going into the last quarter 45 points down, the Wellers piled on 9 goals and 9 points to Peninsula’s solitary point.
