NORTHERN BLUES & KEW GO BACK TO BACK, WEST BRUNSWICK UPSET HAWKS

By VAFA · September 13, 2014
NORTHERN BLUES & KEW GO BACK TO BACK, WEST BRUNSWICK UPSET HAWKS

At Casey Fields in Division 2, Kew claimed the club’s first set of back-to-back premierships as they defeated St Mary’s Salesian by 11 points in a low scoring match. Kew jumped the Saints with five goals to nil in the opening term, as they looked like running away with it. However St Mary’s roared back into the contest to close within three points, however that was as close as they got. With ten minutes to go in the last though, Kew kicked their first goal of the final quarter to break St Mary’s spirit. In the end Kew were able to cement their own history earning back-to-back titles under the guidance of Ian Aitken.

The Division 3 Grand Final was won by Northern Blues by 24 points after they finished strongest over Richmond Central to win back to back premierships.

The game started at a fierce pace as Northern Blues kicked the first two goals of the game inside the opening five minutes. Richmond Central got their first before Northern kicked another then missed a series of chances to take a significant advantage into quarter time. A couple of late goals saw that Snakes only trailed by two points at the first change.

The momentum Richmond Central had garnered in the last part of the first, was carried into the second as they kicked the opening couple of goals to establish a break on Blues. However Bleus were up the to the task and their running game created chances for them as they kicked the three of the last four goals of the term to take a five point lead into half time.

Blues had all the running in the third quarter but wasted many chances toput the game beyond the reach of the Snakes. Nevertheless, they took a 22 point advantage into the final quarter.

Richmond Central were not done with yet though, and managed to kick three of the first four goals of the last to close within a couple of kicks, but Blues kicked a steadier. Blues had far more scoring shots and in the end they were the difference, as Damon Marcon was named best on ground

Earlier in the day, Richmond Central claimed the Division 3 Reserves Grand Final with a 11.8.74 to 9.5.59 win over UHS-VU. Richmond Central’s Stephen Bohan was awarded the best on ground medal.

In Division 4, West Brunswick won a first premiership since 2008 as they upset Hawthorn, sending the Hawks to their first loss of 2014. The Hawks, so strong all year were unable to match the constant pressure and scoring power of West Brunswick. In the end the final margin was 38 points in favour of the Magpies.

Earlier in the day, Hawthorn’s reserves won the flag against West Brunswick’s reserves who also had not lost a game all year.
