Division 1 saw another opening day thriller between the combines of North Old Boys/St Patricks and Prahran Assumption. This game was played in the country last year but the city slickers will be glad it was only a local trip this time as NOBs got home by a goal. Hogarth may have kicked six for the Two Blues, but Ford’s four and handy three quarter time buffer prevented Prahran Assumption from stealing the win.
Kew’s jump to Division 1 football proved no obstacle as the Bears raised another flag and duly celebrated with a 33 point win over Old Geelong at Victoria Park in Kew.
Whitefriars and Ormond went goal for goal throughout the first half before the Monders used their Premier C experience to draw clear of the Friars late in the game to win by 41 points. Chisholm and Tahana both kicked four in the win, whilst Nitas had five of his own in a losing side.
St Mary’s Salesian made a habit of thrashing sides in Division 2 last year on their way to a runners up finish and they have commenced in the same fashion in Division 1. The Saints handing Yarra Valley a 93 point hammering on their own patch to start the year off in the best possible fashion. Puruntatameri was the star booting eight goals as the Bushrangers were left to rue a slow start in Division 1.
Old Mentonians got their campaign off to the best possible start, weathering a Bulleen Templestowe comeback to hold on for an eight point win. The Bullants kicked six goals to three in the final quarter, but couldn’t bridge the gap to the Panthers.
