Old Ivanhoe invaded Therry Penola’s home ground fortress, John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve last weekend and for the first time in two and a half years the Lions were defeated at home as the Hoes walked away 35 point winners. Elsewhere, Monash Blues snuck away with the four points in a nail-biting finish against Peninsula; Marcellin got the comfortable victory over a struggling Williamstown CYMS; Old Haileyburians moved into the top four with a win over Oakleigh; and Old Camberwell secured its first win of the season against PEGS Football Club.
Old Ivanhoe got the jump on Therry Penola in the first term, kicking out to a two goal advantage with the help of a Carl Groth double. But Therry didn’t make it easy for the Hoes as the Lions outscored the visitors in the second term to chip the margin back to eight points at half time. The third quarter however, was all Old Ivanhoe with four goals to one that left Therry Penola playing catch up. The Lions were unable to close the distance in the last as Old Ivanhoe ran away with the points to win by 35. Youngster, William Murphy’s speed across the ground and damaging disposal in a best on performance was a focal point in the victory.
Monash Blues found the edge in the final quarter to steal victory away from Peninsula, who now finds itself on the outer in fifth spot. Monash took a 16 point lead at the end of the first, but this was as big as the margin ever reached. Monash’s inaccuracy at goal let the Pirates close the gap to six points with three goals in the second. Three more in the third saw Peninsula take the lead for the first time to go into the final change three points in front. Monash however kicked a vital three majors of its own in the last quarter to take the victory by three points. Harry Whitty’s four goals weren’t enough for Peninsula to take home the win as Andrew Hickey led the charge for a sixth straight victory.
Marcellin secured top spot on the Premier C ladder with a percentage boosting victory over Williamstown CYMS. The Eagles made its agenda known as it brushed six goals past the CY’s in the first quarter. Williamstown didn’t lay down for the ladder leaders in the second term with a five goal response to pull the halftime margin to 19. But Marcellin ended the contest after the major break with 11 more goals to its tally to topple over Williamstown. Nicholas Ebinger kicked five goals for the CY’s, while the Eagles had six multiple goal kickers, including Andrew Kay and Xavier Burns who had four apiece.
Old Haileyburians earned a berth in the top four with a solid victory over Oakleigh at Scammell Reserve. While the Bloods could never break away from Oakleigh, it managed to holster a slender lead at each change. Each time the Krushers forced their way back into the game Haileybury answered. A five point lead at quarter time became nine at the half way mark. Oakleigh couldn’t secure the lead at any change as Haileyburians headed home with a 15 point win. Aaron Cloke (5) and Trevor Bromley (3) were Oakleigh’s only real threatening goal scorers, while the Bloods had the edge with midfielders chipping in along side big man Daniel Harrison who kicked 5.
The winless duo Old Camberwell and PEGS squared off to decide who’d finally open their accounts in the 2015 season. The home side, Old Camberwell opened up a minor seven point lead in the first, before rapidly extending it to 30 at halftime. Inaccuracy at goal however kept the margin from being unreachable for PEGS. But nevertheless the Bombers didn’t have the firepower to seriously dig away at the deficit as the Weller’s celebrated its first win by 25 points. Phillip Bennett was named best on ground in the Old Camberwell victory.
This week, Old Ivanhoe host ladder leaders, Marcellin while the Hoes have the capability to slip past the Eagles, expecting Marcellin to take the points in a close game. Williamstown CYMS will get a rare victory this season and knock off the travelling PEGS. Peninsula face Therry Penola; the Pirates will aim to get back into the four with a victory over the Lions. Old Haileyburians host Old Camberwell, as the Bloods will secure a top four spot. Oakleigh plays Monash Blues, predicting the Blues to string along another victory and make it seven in a row.
