Remembering Ian Redpath
The recent passing of Australian cricketing great Ian Redpath reminded us of Paul Amy’s recent story for News Corp about Ian’s passion for the VAFA. Redpath is best known as
Brendan Iezzi and Jack Osborn were both taken to hospital for scans in the first quarter of Old Trinity’s match against Old Xaverians with both players suffering knee injuries. Whilst the prognosis is not yet known, the loss of two key players to a very impressive Old Trinity side will be a setback for the green and gold. Despite the injuries, Old Trinity whilst still reduced to 20 men for the day managed to win every quarter against Old Xaverians before running out 40 point winners to stay a game clear on top of William Buck Premier. Jacob Steinhart was the standout on the wing, but Old Trinity’s effort again highlighted by their brilliant team running play.
An ambulance was also called to Banksia Reserve early in the match as Uni Blues suffered yet another injury, with Jack Townley taken to hospital after he was knocked out. Beaumaris came away with the four points after they withstood a Blues comeback to win by 21 points to re-ignite their season. The Sharks were great from the get go and thoroughly deserved the win, Blues can’t take a trick as they drop to a fifth straight loss.
Old Carey had a day to forget as the Panthers were crushed by 103 points at University Oval by a rampant University Blacks. Old Carey didn’t kick a goal until late in the final quarter, ending the day with an abysmal 3.16. Blacks confidence grew with every Old Carey turnover – and there were plenty – as Bede Mahon again shone with four goals, with Charlie Richardson and Alistair Robbins both kicking three.
De La Salle jumped Collegians but couldn’t prevent the Lions coming back to steal a victory that looked De La’s for the taking for much of the day. Shura Taft booted another four goals as the Lions moved to third spot with a 12 point win having trailed De La Salle at every siren bar the last.
Chad Jones kicked five goals and that was the margin (29 points) as St Bernard’s overcame Old Scotch at the Snakepit. Alex Boyse also chimed in with four goals as St Bernard’s send Old Scotch to a fifth straight loss. Jonno Daggian booted five goals for the Cardinals in the loss.
