Old Scotch and Uni Blues played out a thriller at Camberwell with Uni Blues putting in a four quarter effort to claim a 6-point win. The result sees the Blues move to 5th on the ladder. In a low scoring affair it was Blues who took the ascendancy, leading by 5 points at the first break and 9 points at the half. Scotch just couldn’t find a reply, and but for some wayward kicking, could easily have found themselves in front. Poor kicking has been a consistent feature of this season, and this contest was no exception. Of Scotch’s eleven scoring shots in the first half they could only muster one goal. The Cardinals did fire up in the last term kicking 5.1 to 2.5 but it still wasn’t enough for the home team. Montgomery kicked 3 and was best on ground for Uni and Townsend was Scotch’s best. Scotch, so good three weeks ago against St. Kevins now sit 8th on the ladder and continue to fall by narrow margins. If the Cardinals are any chance at climbing the ladder this season they will need to put four quarters of football together.
For the first time in a very long time Old Melburnian’s have won two games in a row and remarkably are off the bottom of the table with a 22-point victory over University Blacks at Crawford Oval. They have turned their season around after losing their first six contests by almost 100-point margins. Despite these results OM’s have confidence to burn. Although they will not make finals this season, results like this will be a platform to build upon for their next campaign. Alex McFarlane continues to be their stand out player, in their best for the fifth time this year. Clarke and Dow were good for Blacks on a tough day. OM’s take on St Kevins this week in what could be another tough day at the office, but I have said that before and been wrong. Could they beat them? Doubtful, but you never know.
It was touted to be the game of the round and it lived up to the hype. This was a cracker between Skobs and Beaumaris. The Sharks have been the in form side in the competition over the last month and many including myself believed they were capable of knocking off St Kevins, after taking care of Bernards a few weeks earlier. It wasn’t to be on Saturday, but they were gallant in defeat. Beauy led at quarter time before being reeled in by a sharp Skobs outfit to trail by 9 points at the half and 19 points at the end of the third. They eventually succumbed to the tune of 28 points. Lewis and Kerr kicked 3 each for Skobs, with Tate the best player on the ground. Zagni continued his good form for Beauy booting 3 with Beattie–Powell kicking 2 and featuring in the best.
De La Salle are without doubt the big surprise packet of 2015, they have been more than competitive in each of their games and were ever so close to knocking off last years premiers at Waverley Park. In a low scoring, scrappy affair De La stuck it to Bernards and competed right to the end with the Snowdogs winning by 2 points. De La are playing some tremendous football and they are moving the ball beautifully. Should they make to the finals, beware. They are very capable of causing big upsets. Credit to Bernards also for finding a way to win in the contest, their regulars stood up with Sibbald kicking 2 and Delzoppo getting plenty of leather. Vawser continued his good form over the last few weeks and added a goal to his tally while Krelle was also outstanding for the home team.
Old Xavs were half asleep to start their game against Old Trinity team who took it right up to them on their home deck. Trinity trailed by 25 at half time before Xavs clicked into gear in the 3rd booting 11 goals to none with Sam Cleeve booting 5 in the quarter on his way to 9 for the game. Harry Kelly continues to impress with 5 goals of his own and Ollie Silk was outstanding all day and was in everything. For the home side Meerman and Hall were quite good and toiled hard all day on what was a rough day for Old Trinity. Another big win for Old Xavs in a game they were expected to win, their next task comes against the Giant killing De La which will not doubt be a ripper.
