VAFA selectors have named a strong Senior Big V squad that will take on AFL Victoria Country in Bendigo on 11 July.
Of the William Buck Premier teams, St Bernards and University Blues have the most representatives with six players named in the seniors, including potential senior Big V debutants Piers Flanagan and Marshall Rippon (Blues) and Alex McLeod, Simon Caven and Tristan Cartledge (St Bernards). University Blacks and St Bernard’s both have five representatives. The squad features only four Premier B players this season due to selectors wanting to name a strong Premier B-Division 4 squad for the match against the Country Number 2 team.
Thirteen players that played for the senior side in the win against Northern Football League earlier this year have bee named. Co-Coaches Cam Roberts and Matthew Kempton will again lead the side as they look to secure a third straight win against the Country.
Due to the timing of matches with the AAFC Carnival falling a week before, selectors are keen to ensure a careful management of players over the two week representative period. Players selected in the U23 Squad who are also selected to play against AFL Victoria Country will have their options discussed at Under 23 training on Wednesday the 17th of June. Representative coaching staff will be at the training to discuss managing workloads.
The senior squad will train at Harry Trott Oval (Collegians home ground) with the first session to be, Wednesday 24 June. There will be sessions on Wednesday 1 July, then Tuesday 7 July and Thursday 9 July.
