Ikon Park will play host to the highly-anticipated William Buck Premier grand final between St Bernard’s and Old Trinity this Sunday afternoon.
A new era in Victorian Amateur Football, it is the first time since 1968 the Premier section decider has been played away from Sportscover Arena, Elsternwick Park.
Ikon Park (formerly Princes Park) is a venue synonymous with showcase events and the VAFA is proud to have secured its services for the William Buck Premier and Premier Reserves grand finals.
If playing the senior division grand final at Ikon Park was not enough to wet one’s football-induced appetite, the two most successful sides throughout the 2015 home and away fixture will be headlining after Bernard’s defeated University Blues by 53 points at Sportscover Arena over the weekend.
Finishing one and two heading into the finals, OT and Bernard’s met in the second semi (qualifying final), with OT recording an unbelievable seven-point come-from-behind victory and earning themselves a week’s rest.
Despite having to play the extra match, Bernard’s won’t be disappointed at the lack of rest, instead choosing to focus on the form showcased throughout the preliminary and looking to take it into this weekend’s big dance.
Both sides have met two times throughout the home and away fixture, with the ledger split one-all before their semi-final victory gave OT the slight ascendancy in the battle of the minds.
Gabe Hamilton, Harry Tinney and Ned Hunt headline a 22-star strong line-up for OT, while the Caven brothers, Adam Bentick and Tom Sullivan lead a dominant Bernard’s outfit.
It is anyone’s game and more importantly, it is anyone’s premiership.
Prior to the seniors grand final, University Blues and Old Xaverians will clash for the right to hold aloft the Premier reserves premiership cup. Commencing at 11:40am, it bodes as the perfect appetiser to the main event, with both sides in red-hot form.
One thing is for sure, if you are a fan of football in its purest and most entertaining form – get down to Ikon Park on Sunday.
