Vale Guy Rodrigues 1935-2015

By Nick Armistead · December 14, 2015
Vale Guy Rodrigues 1935-2015

Guy 2Guy Rodrigues, a long-serving and dedicated servant of the Old Paradians’ Association Amateur Football Club, and father to former Paradians Garnet (1980) and Gavin (1986), died this morning at the age of 80.

The name Guy Rodrigues has been synonymous with Parade for more than 40 years – a remarkable feat considering this extremely popular figure became part of the Parade community just four years after his arrival in this country from Sri Lanka with his young family.

Since then, Guy’s contributions have extended into the Parade community in a number of ways including the Old Paradians’ Association in the earlier years.

Some would argue there was an omen in Guy arriving in Australia in 1968 as it was the first year the OPAAFC took out the senior, reserve and under 19 premierships.

For years, Guy has committed his energies with little fuss or fanfare to both Parade College and the Old Paradians’ Association Amateur Football Club.

Though he never attended the College, Guy was recognised as an Honorary Old Paradian in 2014, an award he shares with close friends Maurie Considine and Keith Sharkie with whom he is pictured.

This year, he was front and centre in the winners’ circle at Craigieburn when the Old Paradians’ Association Amateur Football Club senior team landed the D Section Premiership – the club’s first in almost 30 years.

Guy’s passing follows the recent death of Phil McLaughlin, the captain of the club’s Team of the Century and generally considered the greatest Old Paradian footballer ever to represent the club.
The deepest sympathies of the Parade community are with members of the Rodrigues family at this time.
