VAFA Statement – January 2026

At the conclusion of the 2016 VAFA Conference held at Monash University Caulfield on Saturday 13 February, the VAFA sent out a survey to those who attended in a bid to garner their feedback on this year’s edition.
The results are in.
The majority of questions were ranked out of six – with six being the highest possible score – and the VAFA is proud to announce 96.5% of Club representatives gave the Conference an overall score in the positive range.
The concussion session with Dr Jo Sherry from Epworth proved popular amongst those who attended, with 94% of those who took the survey admitting they learnt something they could take back to their Club. Due to the increased attention currently being applied to players who suffer concussion in all sports, Dr Sherry gave Club representatives vital information regarding the best ways to deal with it during and after matches.
Similarly, the VAFA’s new social issues session was a hit as it received 100% marks for both relevancy to Clubs and whether it should go ahead again next year. S.A.L.T. representative, David Burt, spoke about many of the issues facing Clubs and young men in particular, with the session receiving an overall 93.75% score in the positive range.
Communications and social media experts, Ben Tollady (social media) and Andrew Leonard (digital media and website management) gave two very well-received presentations on their individual areas. Director of Thirst Studios, Tollady, spoke in length about different social media platforms and gave tips for best practices of each, earning a 92.85% positive rating for his overall session and ability to engage his audience. Results revealed 80% of Club members rate Twitter and Facebook as the platforms most relevant to Clubs, while nearly 70% find Periscope and Snapchat the most intriguing.
Club Management with UHS-VU secretary, Tony Boyce, rated positively with his informative presentation at 72% giving Clubs a myriad of useful options to attaining and maintaining financial stability, while the President’s forum received a 61%; also in the positive range.
The Sponsor’s Expo was once again a highlight of the Conference, with Club members voting the opportunity to learn what VAFA sponsors can offer Clubs their number one aspect, while the Coaches Presentation with Simon Dalrymple received deserved plaudits with a 92% rating in the positive range.
The VAFA thanks all those who completed the survey and looks forward to using the results to continue to make it as relevant and interesting to Clubs as possible.
