De La victorious in William Buck Premier night time classic

Old Trinity retained their position at the top of the William Buck Premier ladder with a hard-fought 26-point victory against University Blacks at Daley Oval. The Blacks came hard in the third quarter; after trailing by as much as four goals they reduced the margin to just four points at the last break on the back of a five-goal to two third term. However, led by Andrew Kyriacopolous and Jack Hunt for the second consecutive week, the T’s found an extra gear in the last quarter and registered four unanswered goals to run away with the win. Lochie Dornauf was the sole multiple goal kicker for the Blacks, while Brendan Dess and Bede Mahon were their best.

Collegians put the disappointment of an opening round loss to the Blacks behind them as they upset the reigning premiers to the tune of 34 points at Harry Trott Oval. Led by Lindsay Apted and Thomas Penberthy, the Lions were too strong in defence as they allowed just five goals from their winless opponents. Marcus Deleur and James Bennie fought hard for the Snow Dogs and joint Woodrow medallist, Adam Bentick, registered two majors but it was not enough as the Lions made more of their opportunities in front of goals, kicking 10.18 to the Snow Dogs’ 5.14. The win places the Lions seventh on the ladder, while the Snow Dogs sit in ninth after two rounds.

University Blues put in an improved effort against Old Carey at Uni Oval this weekend, defeating the Panthers by 39 points. A four-goal to nil opening quarter spelt danger for the Panthers, but the young squad regrouped and were outscored by just two goals in the remaining three quarters. The mercurial Tom Quinn continued his strong start to the year with three majors for the Blues, while Julian Rowe was the Panthers’ best player in his 100^th game for the Club.

Old Melburnians exacted a little revenge in their 2015 Premier B Grand Final rematch against St Kevin’s, coming from three points down at quarter time to run over SKOB by 45 points at Sportscover Arena. OMs were savage in defence, allowing SKOB to register majors in just two quarters – two in Q1 and two in Q3.  George Hurley-Wellington ran riot in a best-on-ground display, booting four goals alongside Alexander Armstrong’s three. Young Conor Ross stood out for SKOB as their most effective player in their second consecutive loss.

De La Salle came from behind to record a thrilling one-point victory against Old Xaverians under lights at Toorak Park last night. Trailing by four goals at the first break, De La wrestled back the momentum with a five-goal to nil second quarter before the Xavs got on top again in front of their home crowd in the third. Down by nine points with just 30 minutes to play, the De La train went next level as Jake and Sam Williams lit it up through the midfield. 2.6 to 1.2 proved just enough to claim victory, with Sam Pickett and Leigh Harrison kicking three apiece. Matt Handley continued his stellar form to start the season as he booted five of his side’s nine majors. The win keeps De La undefeated in third position on the ladder, while the Xavs fall to fourth on the back of their first loss.
