Eagles down Wells for first of the year, Bears overpower Monders in 2015 Div 1 title rematch

Eagles down Wells for first of the year, Bears overpower Monders in 2015 Div 1 title rematch

A four-goal bag from Adrian Del Monte helped Old Ivanhoe Grammarians to a 38-point win against Williamstown CYMS at Chelsworth Park. Leding by 15 points at the last break, the Hoes kicked seven goals to three in the final term to run away with their fourth win for the year. Paul Colbert joined the Del Monte goal kicking party with three of his own, while Sam Geilings was named best afield. Nick Blackney played his best game for the year for the CYs, who now sit fifth with three wins.

Caulfield made it four wins from their first five matches with a strong 47-point win against Oakleigh at Glenhuntly Oval. Leading by just 14 at the final break, the Fields put on a clinic in the last with four unanswered goals while keeping their opponents a solitary behind. Louis O’Keefe was among the goals again for the Fields with four, while Jack Wallace was best on ground. Trevor Bromley bagged four for the Krushers, who sit ninth with just the one win so far in 2016.

Marcellin recorded their first win of the season with a hard-fought 10-point victory against Old Camberwell at Gordon Barnard Reserve. Leading by 48 points at three quarter time, the Eagles almost lost it all when the Wells put together a seven-goal to one final term.  However, the early dominance paid dividends, with Andrew Kay kicking five goals in a best-on-ground performance and James Robertson and Jeremiah Antypas registering three each. Tom Kanz starred for the Wells with five goals.

Mazenod solidified their position at the top of the Premier C ladder after they defeated second-placed Peninsula by 18 points on the Pirates’ home turf. With just five points separating the two sides at the start of the fourth, the Nodders took it up a gear and piled on six goals to four in a relatively free-flowing last term. Tom Cincotta played a big role in the win, booting four goals and taking his overall tally to 15 for the season. Conversely, Stefan Barbour was well held by the Nodders’ defenders, adding just one to his tally of 19. Despite their first loss of the season, the Pirates still sit second with a percentage of 139.63.

Kew and Ormond squared off in a classic between the 2015 Division 1 grand finalists, with the Bears overrunning the Monders by 16 points at Victoria Park. Trailing by one point at the half time break, the Bears hit back with 11 goals to seven in the final two quarters, thanks in large to a five-goal haul from Zach Jones. Rob Chisholm did the damage at the other end with four for the Monders. The win is the Bear’s second for the year as they sit in sixth spot on the ladder, while the Monders are still searching for their first.
