Nodders unstoppable

By Christian Burgess – Premier C Scribe

Mazenod is now the sole leader in Premier C, one game clear and a hefty percentage to go with it. Having now beaten Peninsula, Old Ivanhoe, Kew, Old Camberwell and Caulfield Grammarians, the question looms, can Mazenod go the entire season undefeated? Remarkably, Mazenod has now beaten the entire top six (excluding Williamstown CYMS) and is yet to play the bottom three teams.

Mazenod’s game on the weekend proved they won’t be giving up top spot anytime soon, kicking six goals in the last quarter against the second placed Pirates. A four goal lead at quarter time to Mazenod, was the largest at any break as they led by 1 point at half time and five points at three quarter time. Cincotta, Phibbs, McKeogh and Reed were all multiple goal kickers who played a factor in the six goal last quarter shooting the Nodders to 18 point victory. Dean Izon was instrumental for the Nodders, whilst Nicholas Fisher found himself in the best for the second consecutive game. Mazenod’s defence is outstanding this season, with their average score against being less than 10 goals. Leading goal kicker Stefan Barbour was restricted to only the one goal for the game.

Caulfield Grammarians locked in third spot on the ladder after their victory against Oakleigh on the weekend. Caulfield’s last quarter inaccurate kicking stopped them from extending their lead beyond 50 points. Louis O’Keefe proved to be a handful for the Krushers kicking four whilst Jack Wallace played his best game for the season. Caulfield had 14 scoring shots in the last quarter and only allowed the Krushers one point. Patrick Ioannidis was superb for the Krushers. The Krushers average the largest ‘score against’ and will need to reduce this statistic when they face Peninsula this weekend who average the biggest score each week.

Andrew Kay booted five majors in the high scoring affair between Marcellin and Old Camberwell. Marcellin led at every break to run out eventual winners by 10 points. Old Camberwell kicked seven last quarter goals but the 48 point three quarter time lead proved to be too much. Marcellin did the work early in the ‘Premiership quarter’ kicking eight goals straight with six multiple goal scorers for the day. Thomas Kanz kicked 5 majors to bring his season tally to 18.

Old Ivanhoe were too strong for Williamstown CYMS and depth proved to be the difference as Old Ivanhoe had 10 goal scorers for the day including Adrian Del Monte who finished with four, his best effort for the season. The Hoes led all game, saving their best quarter until the last kicking seven goals. Despite having the lowest percentage in the top six, The Hoes now sit fourth on the ladder. Williamstown hold onto fifth spot and will be up against a struggling Marcellin next weekend.

It was the Grand Final rematch that lived up to all expectations. Despite Ormond being bottom of the ladder with four losses prior to the game, they had played four of the top five teams and were never to be written off. Only three points separated the two at three quarter time before Kew kicked seven goals in the last to Ormond’s four. Zachary Jones was spectacular kicking five majors and was well helped by Lachlan James who finished with three. Jeremy Simon was best afield for Ormond whilst Robert Chisolm finished the day with four of Ormond’s 14 goals. Ormond will be searching for their first win against ladder leader Mazenod this weekend.
