PEGS upset Panthers in skipper’s 150th

PEGS has done what was widely thought impossible after the first six rounds of Division 1 football, defeating Old Mentonians by 18 points and giving the Panthers their first loss of the season. Trent Skurrie led from the front in skipper Brad Jones’ 150th with four majors for PEGS, helping them to an eight-goal to five second half after an even first two terms. Daniel Maitland was the best for the Panthers, with none of their dominant and vast array of forwards kicking more than two goals each. The Panthers remain atop the ladder, while PEGS are third and one win behind the leaders.

Five Kyle Adams goals were not enough as Brunswick NOBSPC went down to Ivanhoe to the tune of 30 points at Alec Gillon Oval. Despite trailing by two goals at the end of the first quarter, the Hoes piled on 13 of the next 20 as they asserted their dominance and registered their second win in a row. Reuben Blackmore-Moore was in stunning form, kicking four in a best-on-ground performance. The Hoes sit two places against NOBPC in sixth spot on the ladder.

St Mary’s Salesian kept Old Paradians winless seven rounds into the season, defeating them by eight points in a low-scoring slog at Garvey Oval. 16 goals were kicked for the match, with Stefan Gusts doing the bulk of the damage with four majors for the Saints, while Michael Boundy snagged three for the Raiders. The fourth-placed Saints are struggling for percentage with 93.19 but remain just one win behind the leaders. The Raiders remain at the bottom of the ladder after garnering just the one tie so far this year.

Old Geelong proved far too strong for the ever-improving Whitefriars and refused to give them an inch during their 81-point thrashing at Whitefriars College. New recruit, George Burbury, was a cut above all others with six goals in a best-on-ground performance for Ogs and Jock Grimshaw continued his hot form in front of goals with three. Ryan Malt stood firm with five goals for the Friars, who in seventh spot on the ladder and two positions below Ogs.

Therry Penola kept second spot on the Division 1 ladder after they held on to defeat Prahran Assumption in a three-point thriller at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve. Jarrod Bannister is a monster in front of the big sticks and his four goals made it 21 from the past four outings, while Adam Sleight was best for the Two Blues.
