We meet the half way mark of the season and now have to throw back two weekends to our last game thanks to the VAFA rep match. Mazenod have now faced every team and are unbeaten, will they be stopped this year? Old Ivanhoe may have just proved that they are likely heroes to bring down the Nodders as they got the upper hand on second placed Caulfield. The giant Aaron Cloke leads the tally at the halfway point, four goals clear of Thomas Kanz of Old Camberwell. The ever versatile Andrew Brazzale sits third in the league goal kicking and has not been held goalless yet this season. Club legend Dermot Cleary has appeared in side’s best players the most of any player this year including two best on ground performances and four second best.
Mazenod’s unbeaten streak remained in tact over the weekend as they defeated Marcellin by 43 points at Central Reserve. A six-goal to one third term ultimately made the difference, with seven goals from Nodder Francis Reed the highlight of the match. James Robertson and Jeremiah Antypas kicked three each for the Eagles.
Old Ivanhoe put last weekend’s loss to Oakleigh behind them as they reversed the result with a hard-fought three-point win against the in-form Caulfield Grammarians at Chelsworth Park. Trailing by four points at the last break, the Hoes kicked four goals to three in the fourth to run out winners, with Adrian Del Monte bagging five. Tom Green was the best for the Fields, who suffered just their second loss for the season.
Peninsula returned to the winner’s column after two consecutive losses with a 39-point win against Old Camberwell at Gordon Barnard Reserve. Stefan Barbour kicked four for the Pirates after two down weeks from the goal-kicking maestro and James Fletcher starred in a best-on-ground performance. Thomas Kanz recorded two goals or the Wells and took his overall tally to 29 for the year.
Kew finally had a close one go their way when they defeated Williamstown CYMS by two goals at Victoria Park this weekend. Michael Matheson dominated in his first game for the Bears this season and Sam Glover booted three goals. Tim Murphy had his second consecutive standout performance for the CYs.
Four goals from Aaron Cloke helped Oakleigh to their second win on the trot, running over Ormond to the tune of 30 points at Scammell Reserve. Trevor Bromley chipped in with two for the Krushers, while Simon Keleher snagged three for the Monders.
