Roys down Sharks, Cardinals end winless streak

A nine-goal third term has handed Fitzroy their third successive win as they took down Beaumaris by 20 points at Brunswick Street Oval. Trailing by four points at the main break, the Roys kicked into action with 9.3 to 3.3 as Luke Baker (four) and Daniel Bissetto (four) led from the front. Corbin Stevic (three) and Lachlan Henderson (three) combined for another six for the Roys, while Robert Cathcart starred with a bag of five for the Sharks. Adam Schneider’s second game for the club was also his best as he registered three majors, but it wasn’t enough as the Roys held firm against the ladder leaders.

Monash Blues ended Old Brighton’s five-game winning streak as they held on for an eight-point win at Brighton Beach Oval. Six unanswered goals in the first term was exactly what the Blues would have been hoping for, but an improved effort over the next two quarters saw the Tonners reduce the margin to four goals before almost snatching victory in a  frantic final term. Andrew Young and Nick Petering booted four each for the Blues, while Joel Bartram was named best afield. Ben Jakobi, William Bardoel and Jack Rutter each kicked multiples for the Tonners, who now sit two games outside the four.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers came from a goal down at the half to record a hard fought nine-point victory against Ajax at Gary Smorgon Oval. A five-goal to one third term proved the difference between the two sides as Josh Cowan top-scored with three majors for the Tigers. Alex Smout and Pat Tyquin starred for the winning side, while David Fayman made it 33 goals for the year with three for the eighth-placed Jackas.

Hampton Rovers registered their fourth win for the season as they ran over Parkdale Vultures to the tune of 22 points at Gerry Green Reserve. Nathan Smith starred with five goals in a best-on-ground performance for the Rovers, while teammates Sam Bradford (three) and Daniel Corp (two) also kicked multiples. Charlie Dillon fought valiantly for the Vultures and Josh Manning top-scored with three goals. The Rovers remain 10^th but sit on the same amount of wins as the ninth-placed Bloods, while the Vultures sit seventh.

Old Scotch ended a three-game winless streak and recorded a much-needed victory as they ran over Old Haileybury by 14 points at Princes Park, Caulfield. Trailing by four points at quarter time, the Cardinals improved with seven goals to four in the second and third, which ultimately proved the difference. Jack Bull and Gene Van Den Broek starred for the Cardinals as their two best players, while returnees Jono Daggian (three) and Scott Sherwen (two) hit the scoreboard. John Nicolopoulos nailed four goals for the Bloods, who sit in ninth position on the ladder and two wins below Ajax.
