Vultures, Boland down Panthers, Snow Dogs claim fourth successive win

Old Scotch continued their unbeaten start to the season with a hard-fought 23-point win over Ajax at Gary Smorgon Oval. Leading by just one point at the last break, the Cardinals piled on four goals to one in a dominant final term. Jack Bull did his GT Moore Medal chances no harm with another best-on-ground performance for the third-placed Cardinals, while their 12 goals were shared among nine goal kickers. David Fayman top scored with three goals for the Jackas, who still sit fourth on the ladder on percentage.

The train at St Bernard’s showed no signs of slowing down when they claimed their fourth win from as many starts via a 50-point victory over Fitzroy at Brunswick Street Oval. The Snow Dogs jumped out of the blocks with 4.4 to one behind and refused to let up as the match progressed, finishing with 30 scoring shots to 15. Simon Caven led from the front in a best-on-ground display and Zach O’Halloran was the main recipient in front of goal with four majors. 2015 Moore Medallist and Roys skipper, Rory Angiolella, was at his very best through the Roys’ midfield but they’ll now look to regroup after two straight losses.

Old Brighton strengthened their claim for Premier B supremacy in 2017 with a dominant 42-point win against Monash Blues this afternoon. The Tonners, who have now won four on the trot and sit atop the ladder with a percentage of 342.02, kicked 29 scoring shots to 12 and held the Blues to just one goal in the first three quarters. The Blues added four straight in the last term but it was to no avail as the Tonners registered another 3.5. Ben Austen starred in a best-on-ground performance for the ladder-leaders, while K Mason led the charge for the eighth-placed Blues.

Parkdale Vultures secured their first four points of the season, defeating Old Carey by 25 at Gerry Green Reserve. After injuring his knee in the first round last year and missing the remainder of the season, Matt Boland returned and starred from the get-go with six goals. It was a devastating end to his season in 2016, with the talented forward kicking five goals prior to injuring his knee at the start of the second term. Morgan Evans maintained his goal kicking form with four for the Panthers, who are yet to win a game in 2017 and sit ninth on the ladder and two spots below the Vultures.

Mazenod continued their winning form in their grand final rematch against Peninsula, running out 66-point winners at Emil Madsen Reserve. With just two goals kicking in the opening quarter, the Nodders accelerated for 12 of the next 16 as they refused to give the Pirates a look-in. Jacob Murdock and Liam Welsford kicked three goals each for the sixth-placed Nodders while Sam Glenn and skipper Stu Grigg fought valiantly for the bottom-of-the-table Pirates.
