De La knock off first-placed Lions, OMs edge past Tigers

De La knock off first-placed Lions, OMs edge past Tigers

De La Salle handed Collegians their first loss of the season with a solid 25-point victory at Waverly Oval. Kicking with the breeze in the first term, De La jumped out to a 17-point lead as they locked the ball in their forward half. They kept the Lions goalless when it was their turn to use the breeze and maintained a healthy lead when the game increased its intensity in the second half. Brendan Close and Chris Robinson were named best for De La as Jake Williams (one goal) starred from the opening bounce. Viv Michie (two) and Courtney Hylton impressed for four quarters, while Kenny Ong showcased his elite skillset on both sides of the body as he continually hit up options forward of centre. The Lions remain first on the ladder, while De La move a game clear of Trinity in fifth.

In other games, Old Xaverians came from 22 points down at the half to overrun Beaumaris by nine at Toorak Park, with Matt Handley (six) and Brendan Goss (four) combining for 10 majors. Old Melburnians were too strong for St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in the fourth term with three goals to one allowing them to scramble to a 12-point victory.

University Blues kicked 10 of the first 13 goals on their way to a comprehensive 41-point win over Old Trinity at Daley Oval, while a six-goal haul from Jay Schulz helped St Kevin’s to an 80-point victory over Uni Blacks.
