Tim Nelson – VAFA Chairman
The Board of the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) is pleased to announce Mr Brett Connell has been appointed Chief Executive Officer.
Brett will succeed Michael Sholly after his outstanding 12-year tenure as CEO of the competition.
Brett joins the VAFA from AFL Victoria, where he is currently Community Football and Engagement Manager, leading key business and strategic change in community football. He works with all AFL Victoria Community stakeholders to improve the quality, standard and long-term sustainability of community football.
Prior to this, Brett held the position of Country Football Manager for three years and played an integral role in the restructuring of country football. He initially spent more than 10 years with the VAFA, largely in football operations roles, before moving to the Victorian Country Football League (AFL Victoria) in 2005.
Brett brings a wealth of AFL industry football administration and management skills and has strong working relationships across all parts of community football and, significantly, a strong affinity with the VAFA. In addition to his prior administrative experience, Brett has an outstanding track record as a VAFA premiership player, club captain and representative player.
“I am excited about the future and am looking forward to leading the VAFA during a significant time in the Association’s history,” Brett said.
“The VAFA holds a proud and respected place in, not only the AFL landscape, but the community at large.
“My charter will be to work in collaboration with the key stakeholders; being the VAFA Board, Administration and Clubs, our broader VAFA community, local councils, other community competitions, AFL Victoria and the AFL to continue to foster and grow our great VAFA brand.
“It is indeed an honour and a privilege. I am humbled by the appointment and look forward to leading and being part of a new and exciting era in the VAFA.”
Brett’s appointment follows an extensive and rigorous recruitment process. I would like to thank all parties involved for their diligence and expertise. Brett will commence at VAFA headquarters on July 10.
