Old Geelong Football Club opened its 2025 season in historic fashion, with its women’s side marking their first year in the William Buck Premier competition with two wins straight out
Old Ivanhoe proved far too strong for Williamstown CYMS in their Round 9 clash, running out 47-point winners at Chelsworth Park. Leading by just 14 at half time, the Hoers nailed 12 goals to six in the last two quarters, with Brandon Lee top-scoring with five for the day. Sam Geilings was BOG for the Hoers for the fourth time this year, while Nicholas Reeves-Smyth and Dylan Buttifant kicked four goals each alongside Lee. Russell Ackerly was the most impressive CY across the ground and William Ostrowsky kicked four. Despite a lowly percentage of 89.38, the Hoers sit fourth and one spot below the CYs.
Caulfield reclaimed top spot on the Premier C ladder with a comprehensive 107-point victory over Hampton Rovers at Glenhuntly Oval. The Fields dominated from the outset with eight goals in the first term and didn’t let up as they won every quarter thereafter. Declan Reilly kicked a bag of six for the second week in a row for the Fields, while Andre Lister and Tim Nixon continued their strong form as their best players. The Rovers managed just two goals for the game but captain Christian Carnovale fought valiantly all day.
Old Camberwell secured their fifth win for the year as they defeated Kew by 55 points at Gordon Barnard Reserve. The Wellers skipped out to a 20-point at the first break and refused to give it up, with a further 11 goals to five throughout the day. Chris Hensby kicked two goals and was named best afield for the Wellers, while Nicholas Adamson bagged four. Max Waters and Jack Delbridge were impressive for the winless Bears.
An eight-goal to two second quarter helped Marcellin to a comfortable 47-point win over Old Mentonians at Keysborough Playing Fields. Leading by just five points at the first break, the Eagles blitzed their opponents and maintained their lead with eight goals to seven in the second half. Andrew Kay led the charge in front of the Eagles’ goals with four and Jackson Green was their best for the second successive match. Kyle Conlon starred for the Panthers, who have now lost five of their past six games.
Old Geelong caused the upset of the round as they held off previous ladder-leaders Old Haileybury by four points at Princes Park Caulfield. Leading by 18 points the last break, the Ogs were made to work for it as the Bloods came home with 4.8 to three straight goals. George Burbury starred for the Ogs in his best match for the season and Callum Wood top-scored with four majors. Nathan Waite kicked four of his own for the Bloods and took his season tally to 29, one ahead of Jack Davis (Old Mentonians) and Declan Reilly (Caulfield). It was the Bloods’ second loss for the year and they lose top spot to the Fields. Ogs are seventh with four wins.
