As part of the 125 celebrations of the VAFA, the senior Big V side will where specially-designed 125 guernseys when they run out against AFL Victoria Country at Frankston Oval on Saturday.
More than 1400 VAFA players have had the honour of wearing the Big V jumper at senior level, and each will have their name printed on this year’s guernsey. From Charlie Abbott to Trent Zimbachs, every player’s name from 92 years of Big V football will be running around with the selected 22 on Saturday.
The VAFA has a proud history of providing opportunities for its players to play representative football and there is no higher honour in rep footy than pulling on the Big V.
The history of the Big V commenced in 1925 when the VAFA played its first representative match against the South Australian Amateur Football League (SAAFL) at the MCG.
The senior side has played 168 times since and in that time the VAFA has won 137 matches, a winning percentage of close to 82%. The average winning margin for the senior Big V is 54 points and the longest streak of wins stretches 19 matches from 1962-1969.
The U19 Big V side will commence proceedings on Saturday from 11:30am, before the seniors don their new guernseys from 2:15pm. Entry at the gate is $10, with U15 and pensioners free.
On Sunday, the Big V women’s will debut at representative level when they travel to North Ballarat for their first-ever match against AFL Goldfields.
