Turtles slow down Bushrangers, Two Blues move a game clear in Div 2

Turtles slow down Bushrangers, Two Blues move a game clear in Div 2

Eight goals from Danny Nolan led Old Paradians to an important 42-point victory over Emmaus St Leo’s at Bennettswood Sports Ground. After an even first term with scores levelled 27-apiece, the Raiders broke away with 12 of the next 16 goals. Michael Boundy and Christopher Kandilakis recorded four goals each for the winners, while Thomas Birkett nailed six for the Animals. The Animals fall to ninth following the loss and Raiders are sixth, with just percentage separating them and fourth.

Eltham Collegians registered their most impressive victory of 2017, defeating the third-placed Yarra Old Grammarians by 90 points at Doncaster Reserve. 33 scoring shots to 18 paints a picture of the Turtles’ dominance, with Luke Drakes bagging six goals in a BOG performance. Luke Ogilvie was instrumental to the Turtles’ sixth win of the year while Nick Chamberlain kicked his third straight bag of three goals for the Bushrangers. Chamberlain has kicked at least three majors in nine of his 12 games in 2017 and goals every week. The Turtles climb to fifth spot on the ladder, two below the Bushrangers.

Five goals to one in the opening term paved the way for MHSOB’s 14-point victory over West Brunswick at Melbourne High. Despite kicking 11 goals to nine after the first term, the second-plced Westies were unable to rein in the deficit as Kane Smith led the charge for the Unicorns with five goals. Mitchell Wilson starred for the second successive week for the home side, while Bas Simpson was named best for the Westies. It was a crucial win for the Unicorns who sit fourth on six wins, the same number of victories as the Turtles and Raiders. The loss was just the Westies’ second for the year.

Prahran Assumption strengthened their position atop the Division 2 ladder with a 52-point win over Glen Eira at Packer Reserve. 37 scoring shots to 20 illustrates the dominance of the ladder leaders as Gerard Hogarth bagged six goals and John Stocker starred as best afield for the Two Blues. Julius Waras Carstensen stood tall for the Gryphons who now fall from fifth to seventh on the ladder. The Two Blues move a game clear following the Westies’ loss to MHSOB.

A 14-goal second half helped Bulleen Templestowe record their fourth win of 2017, defeating Hawthorn AFC by 44 points at Rathmines Reserve. Leading by 10 points at half time, the Bullants consistently hit the scoreboard in the final two terms with Kristian Cherbakof nailing seven goals. Jack Cowell kicked four and was named best afield for the Bullants, while star recruit Will Meehan sent home nine goals for the Hawks in just his third senior game for the club. The Bullants now move above the Animals into eighth spot on the ladder while the Hawks continue their charge for win number one.
