Remembering Ian Redpath
The recent passing of Australian cricketing great Ian Redpath reminded us of Paul Amy’s recent story for News Corp about Ian’s passion for the VAFA. Redpath is best known as
Old Haileybury returned to form after two straight losses, defeating Wiliamstown CYMS by 46 points at Princes Park Caulfield. Trailing by eight points at the first break, the Bloods exploded with eight goals to one in the second term and maintained their lead for the remainder of the match. Coming off the back of a lean week whereby he failed to kick a goal against the Panthers, Nathan Waite dominated for the Bloods with seven majors, while Corey Connelly kicked five in a BOG display. Both Jack and Ben Gray registered three goals each for the CYs as they retain fourth spot on the ladder with a 5% buffer over the Ogs.
Old Ivanhoe snapped a five-game losing streak and officially staved off relegation with a 52-point victory over Old Geelong at Chelsworth Park. 10 goals between young gun Nicholas Reeves-Smyth (five) and star veteran Adrian Del Monte (five) helped paved the way for the Hoers important win as they came from 14 points down at the main break and kicked 10 unanswered goals in a dominant second half. William Sloss starred for the Ogs but they missed an opportunity to re-enter the four and remain fifth and %5 below the CYs.
Old Camberwell also officially staved off relegation with a 24-point victory over Kew at Victoria Park. Leading by 10 points after a hard-fought first half, the Wellers nailed 11 goals to nine in a high-scoring final second half as Alex Taverner top-scored with four majors. Zach Herbstreit kicked two and was named best afield for the Wellers, while Michael Hannan went ballistic up forward for the Bears, kicking eight of their 15 goals.
Hampton Rovers’ late bid to avoid relegation ended as they went down to the ladder-leading Caulfield Grammarians by 55 points at Boss James Reserve. On the back of two straight wins, the Rovers stuck with the Fields in the first half and trailed by just nine points, but the Fields dominated thereafter with 10 goals to three. Xavier Jordan was best afield for the second week in a row for the Fields, while Dan Meddings and Will Barker kicked three goals each. Josh Pavlou and Richard Atkins fought hard for the Rovers as they now set themselves for one last game before returning to Division 1 alongside Kew.
Marcellin solidified third spot on the Premier C ladder one week out of finals as they dispatched Old Mentonians to the tune of 80 points at Marcellin College. The Eagles were a picture of consistency across the duration of the match as they kicked at least four goals in every quarter. Andrew Kay and Robert Costanza nailed five goals each for the Eagles while Matt Gasparini starred in a BOG display. No results had been entered for the Panthers but they remain in sixth spot on the ladder and out of the four on percentage only.
